The End: Jaakko Eino Kalevi
The Most Beautiful Man Corpse
Nov 22, 2019 Web Exclusive
To end out the week, we ask Jaakko Eino Kalevi some questions about endings and death.
The Finnish multi-instrumentalist released a new mini-album, Dissolution, today via Domino imprint Weird World. The seven-song release is the follow-up to 2018’s full-length, Out of Touch, which was his fifth album and the follow-up to 2015’s self-titled album. Dissolution was recorded in Berlin and Helsinki. It was announced via a video for its first single, title track “Dissolution.” Kevin Luna directed the “Dissolution” video, which featured a man who can’t stop dancing. Berlin-based Taiwanese singer Yu-Ching Huang features on the song and she also sings on two other songs on the album.
In a cryptic press release statement about Dissolution, Kalevi had this to say: “Just as a drop of ink dissolves in a glass of water, it is said that life on Earth began in this way. It’s impossible to become that drop again. Life on Earth is a mystery—it’s a story of dissolution.”
Read on as Kalevi talks about how and when he’d like to die, his favorite ending to a movie, his death row meal, and his concepts of heaven and hell.
How would you like to die and what age would you like to be?
I just saw this movie Midsommar and there the people jump off a cliff at the age of 72. To live too old can be horrible. I hope will stay in good shape for long. Let’s say I would like to die at 320 years old and in a duel with swords.
What song would you like to be playing at your deathbed?
That would be John Cage’s composition for organ Organ²/ASLSP. It lasts for 639 years.
What song would you like to be performed at your funeral and who would you like to sing it?
“Time to Go” by Steve Kuhn sang by him.
What’s your favorite ending to a movie
2001: A Space Odyssey. Or Old Boy or Dogville.
What’s your favorite series finale last ever episode of a TV show? (Or what’s your least favorite?)
I have to say that the final episode of Game of Thrones was not that satisfying. It was expected though.
What’s your favorite last song on an album?
I like epic last songs and that why I say “Subterraneans” by David Bowie [from Low].
What’s your favorite way a band broke up?
When a band just forgets it is a band.
If you were on death row, what would you like your last meal to be?
I would like to have Indian food. Maybe Malai Kofta.
What’s your concept of the afterlife?
I think our consciousness will be recycled in a similar way than our bodies. I do not know how that exactly is but it would be difficult to imagine personalities to exist after death.
What would be the worst punishment the devil could devise for you in hell, if he exists?
To watch the opening titles of a German TV show Marienhof over and over again.
If reincarnation exists, who or what would you like to be reincarnated as?
Maybe would be interesting to be an octopus. They will rule the world after humans.
What role or achievement would you most like to be remembered for?
I will be remembered as the most beautiful man corpse ever existed. Hehehe I had to quote Mattiesko Hytönen on this.
What would you like your last words to be?
“Noooooooo!”
