Young Jesus

Watch: Young Jesus: “Fourth Zone of Gaits” Video

Dec 17, 2018

One of the better breakout band of the year was Young Jesus. Their record The Whole Thing is Just There was one of the better albums of the year as well, and the track “Fourth Zone of Gaits” might just be the best song on it. Today, Young Jesus shared its video, directed and animated by Peter Nichols. Young Jesus videos thusfar have been artful and clever and this one is no different. Check it out.

“We chose to work with Peter on this video because we’d seen his work and we knew that a sort of other-worldly pacing was a part of it. I had him and the rest of the band over to my apartment where we brainstormed as the song played on loop. He asked us thoughtful questions, we responded with lots of stories and feelings. The name, Fourth Zone of Gaits, is a reference to horse gaits, a trot, a gallop…John was imagining a gait that feels like something else. I think of it as moving along a wave, if you accept it as your context and listen to it, you float. None of us surf but we talked about waves a lot, which Peter understood. Light waves, radio waves, sound waves, the fact that matter exists as both particles and waves. Maybe God is a harp player that invented physics. This is what’s going on in the video.” – Young Jesus

Spirit Was

Watch: Spirit Was “Golden Soul” Video

Dec 11, 2018

Spirit Was is a band from Brooklyn headed by Nick Corbo of LVL UP. Today they shared the video for “Golden Soul”, directed by Tara Bayat, off their just released 2 track illustrated 7”. The two tracks are “demos” from an album in the works. Nice sounding song and a nice looking video. Looking foprward to more. Here’s a little from Corbo from the band’s bandcamp page:

“Experimenting repetition, and with recording an intentional, melodic, distorted rock n roll band where I sing and get to play the electric guitar and record everything on my own and go nuts. Songs about maybe peripherally seeing something, and about listening. About lending a name to a projected creative energy and trying to learn to communicate to them without sacrificing your ability to communicate with anyone else.”

Adrianne Lenker

Watch: Adrianne Lenker “symbol” Video

Nov 29, 2018

Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief gifted us with undoubtedly one of the best, and most personally resonant albums of the year in abysskiss. Today she shared the video for “symbol”. Here’s a bit about from the press release:

Directed by Adam Gundersheimer and V Haddad, it features Adrianne exploring Coney Island, meeting and connecting with different people she encounters. “The sincerity and intimacy of symbol inspired us to take a documentary approach to the music video,” say the directors. “The project is a sort of tribute and love letter to New York City, Coney Island, and all of the people who make those places so special. We spent a couple of days walking the boardwalk and taking video portraits of people we met. We documented whatever they felt like sharing. It was such a warm experience – each person was so giving.”

If you haven’t listened to abysskiss yet, do yourself a kindness, find a quiet place, and do.

Ahh, where have you been? Those muffled Echo and The Bunnymen sounding post-punk guitars and cavernous drums never get old. I had forgotten what they sounded like for a second, then listened to this throwback instrumental by Be Forest. The acclaimed Italian shoegaze/post-punk trio posted video titled “Atto I”. It’s been over four years since the release of their last album Earthbeat. Welcome back.
