In my experience, Saturday night, the last night of SXSW music, is usually the weakest night. Most bands and attendees are fully burnt out by the time the fourth night rolls around and some industry folk even leave Austin on Saturday morning or afternoon, so the Saturday night line-up simply isn’t as strong. Whereas on previous nights there were as many as five bands playing at the same time that I wanted to see, on Saturday night there were rarely more than two truly appealing bands playing at once and during certain hours there was only one. The beauty of this is that you don’t have to agonize over which artists to see. Despite our tiredness and severely sore feet after four days of standing and trekking around Austin, three of the four artists we did see Saturday night got us up and dancing. More

The Most Anticipated Albums of 2010 section in Under the Radar‘s Winter 2010 Issue includes a short article on Rose Elinor Dougall’s debut album. We’ve now posted the full Q&A of that interview. In December of 2008, less than a year after leaving the female-fronted Brighton pop group The Pipettes, Rose Elinor Dougall released her first single as a solo artist, “Another Version of Pop Song.” The following February, Dougall blogged on her MySpace page that her debut album was nearly finished. By the third day of SXSW the lack of sleep was really catching up to us. As with the day before, we had to wake up early again to conduct a photo-shoot (three of them in fact), which again left no time for day parties. By the time the evening rolled around we were already burnt out, but still game to check out more bands. Alas, Friday offered little other than underwhelming sets, including ones by a shy Swedish duo and a surprisingly dark hyped Brooklyn band. More

Day two of SXSW was a bit challenging, considering the lack of sleep we’d gotten the night before. Seeing a show at 1 a.m. is all well and good if you don’t have to wake up early the next morning to write about it or conduct other business. We weren’t able to attend any day parties on the second day of SXSW music 2010, due to two photo-shoots we were conducting, including one at the way too early hour of 10 a.m. (well, early for SXSW). But that night we were able to catch sets from two Canadian bands (including one collective who’s seemingly no longer broken), some Los Angeles natives, and a camera shy actress/singer. More

Under the Radar’s SXSW party is happening today (Saturday, March 20) at Emo’s East Annex (Klub Krucial) from noon to 6 PM, and is presented by JanSport. The venue is indoors, so you can escape the rain. Klub Krucial is directly next door to Emo’s Main Room. The line-up includes Vivian Girls, Sondre Lerche, The Veils, Plants and Animals, Avi Buffalo, Everything Everything, and The Invisible. More

After wandering around a bunch of day parties, our evening’s entertainment for the first night of SXSW 2010 mainly took place at Stubb’s, an outdoor venue I’m not overly wild about. Stubb’s is one of the bigger venues at SXSW, so it doesn’t have the same feel of watching some exciting new artist in a tiny club that the rest of South By has. For the first night we saw sets by The Walkmen, Sharon Jones and the Dap-kings, Broken Bells, Rose Elinor Dougall, and The Invisible. More
