American Football are releasing a new album, American Football (LP3) (in other words it’s their third self-titled album), on March 22 via Polyvinyl. Previously they shared its first single, “Silhouettes.” Now they have shared a video for the song. Shawn Brackbill directed the clip, which is based on a treatment by the band’s Mike Kinsella. Watch it below.

Brackbill had this to say about the video in a press release: “Working on the ‘Silhouettes’ video was an interesting collaboration between the artist and director. I prefer to work on a treatment with a band but this one came from Mike fairly well-formed. It was great to help develop the concept and bring this idea to life. I liked that Mike’s treatment for ‘Silhouettes’ came through to me without a lot of explanation for WHY things were happening. It left things open for interpretation on my end as I helped develop the story. In putting together the final treatment and shot list, I tried to keep the story open-ended as well. To allow the viewer space to make their own interpretations for what they see here in the video.”

American Football (LP3) features guest vocals from Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Land of Talk’s Elizabeth Powell, and Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell. The album is the follow-up to 2016’s American Football (LP2). That long-awaited sophomore album from the emo heroes arrived 17 after their 1999-released self-titled debut. American Football is Steve Holmes (guitar), Mike Kinsella (vocals, guitar), Nate Kinsella (bass), and Steve Lamos (drums, trumpet). As with their last album, Jason Cupp produced the new album, which was recorded at the same studio as LP2, Arc Studios in Omaha, Nebraska.

Kinsella had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “We put a lot of time and a lot of energy into it. We were all thoughtful about what we wanted to put out there. Last time, it was figuring out how to use all of our different arms. This time, we were like - Ok we have these arms, let’s use them.”
