Angel Olsen
In 2016 Angel Olsen released a fantastic new album, MY WOMAN, via Jagjaguwar. It made it to #3 on Under the Radar’s Top 100 Albums of 2016 list. While she hasn’t announced its follow-up album yet, on this Friday, November 10 (via Jagjaguwar) she is releasing Phases, a new collection of B-sides, rarities, and demos, including some previously unreleased tracks. She has already shared one of those previously unheard songs, “Special,” recorded during the sessions for MY WOMAN, as well as a self-directed video for the song. Now she has shared another song from Phases, “Sans,” which is a home demo from 2015. Listen below. She also performed the song on Morning Becomes Eclectic, on the Los Angeles public radio station KCRW. Watch that performance below too (the full KCRW session will be broadcast next Monday, November 13, at 11:15 a.m. pacific time).
Olsen had this to say about “Sans” in a press release: “‘Sans’ was a song I wrote in between Burn Your Fire and MY WOMAN, something short and simple - but about a big thing in my life: travel and what it can do to the psyche. When you’re out there and you’re working and moving so fast it’s difficult to really imagine a time when you were fully realized and known. You know, it’s hard enough to be known when you’re around! But then there are those people in your life that know you and don’t need you around all the time to be or feel close - I suppose it’s about that too.”
Phases also includes the unreleased track “How Many Disasters,” also a home-recorded demos. Phases opens with “Fly On Your Wall,” a track first shared on Bandcamp back in January as the first song of the “Our First 100 Days” anti-President Donald Trump project, and that’s now available outside of Bandcamp.
Olsen is also featured on the new single by Hamilton Leithauser, “Heartstruck (Wild Hunger).”
