Before heading out to Indio, Calif. this weekend for the annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival, Animal Collective have a string of shows lined up this week throughout the Golden State. Last night at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, the band performed a large amount of new, raw material. As Animal Collective is known to work out new material onstage rather than go through a catalog of their most-loved album tracks, this might not have been a shock to the audience—but it’s always a genuinely welcome surprise.
