The third annual Record Store Day is just around the corner—April 17, 2010—and several exclusive releases have just been announced for the event, including ones from Phoenix, Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, Drive-By Truckers, and Fela Kuti.

Record Store Day is organized by the Music Monitor Network, the Coalition of Independent Music Stores, and the Alliance of Independent Music Stores and works to mark the culture of the independent music store. Participating stores will feature performances, meet and greets, cookouts and more along with special releases and promotional materials created specifically for Record Store Day.

Naturally, most of the releases are on vinyl in order to further celebrate the spirit of the indie record store. Although, as recently reported on, Goldfrapp will be releasing their new album on limited edition cassette for Record Store Day. Earlier this week Merge also announced their Record Store Day exclusives and we’ve also reported on Record Store Day releases from Modest Mouse, Deerhoof, and Yeasayer. Here are some exclusives that were just announced:

Beastie Boys - Super surprise content white label 12” vinyl (1,000 available)

Drive-By Truckers - “Your Woman is a Living Thing”/“Just Maybe” 7” vinyl single (both tracks RSD exclusives)

Fela Kuti - 4 songs recorded in LA in 1969 10” EP with replica cover artwork of first Nigerian Fela Kuti record (1,000 available)

Sonic Youth - Hits Are For Squares, 15 tracks selected by other artists with exclusive new Sonic Youth track “Slow Revolution” on individually numbered Double LP [Confusion is Sex and EVOL reissues on 12” white and pink vinyl respectively available early for RSD as well]

Phoenix - “Fences” album track plus remix 12” single on pink vinyl (first vinyl from Phoenix; 3,500 available)

Check out the event’s website for a full listing of participating stores and details.

I think record companies should throw more events like that. It is like having a black Friday sale, people would rush to buy just for the novelty of the event even if they wouldn’t normally buy records.
