Beck Addresses Kanye West’s Stage Crash During Grammys
"I was just so excited he was coming up."

Last night, Beck‘s Morning Phase won Album of the Year at the Grammys. During Beck’s acceptance speech however, Kanye West momentarily ran onstage, calling back to his infamous rant during the 2009 MTV VMAs when Taylor Swift won Best Female Video over Beyoncé. While West refrained from snatching the mic during the broadcast, that didn’t stop him from speaking out against Beck’s win and the Grammys in general in an interview with E! after the broadcast.
”If [the Grammys] want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us,” said West. “Flawless Beyoncé video, and Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé. And at this point, we tired of it! Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music. It’s disrespectful to inspiration. And we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work everyday, and listen to Beyoncé and they feel like it takes them to another place. Then they do this whole promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, an artist, because they want a commercial advertising. No, we not playing with them no more. And by the way, I got my wife, I got my daughter, and my clothing line, so I’m not gonna do nothing to put my daughter at risk. But I am here to fight for creativity, that’s the reason I didn’t say anything tonight.”
Beck himself took everything in stride, saying in a interview with Us Weekly, “I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?” Asked about West’s comments and whether Beyoncé should have won, Beck said, “Absolutely. I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyoncé!”
