The producers of Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story, a documentary about the beloved 1970s power pop band Big Star, need help to finish their film. They have set up a Kickstarter page in which Big Star fans can donate funds to ensure that the music doc is completed. Follow this link to a 9-minute video clip from the film.
The Nothing Can Hurt Me documentary crew were about to depart for Austin for this year’s SXSW to cover both a panel discussion honoring the band and a highly anticipated gig at Antone’s. Sadly, neither turned out as planned as frontman Alex Chilton tragically passed away of a heart attack just three days prior to the show at the age of 59. They ventured to Austin anyway, and captured some candid footage of a last minute tribute cobbled together by current members Jody Stephens, Ken Stringfellow, and Jon Auer.
Featured in the video clip are the likes of R.E.M.‘s Mike Mills, Sondre Lerche, and a particularly emotional Evan Dando. But their work hasn’t ended yet, as they plan to venture to Memphis May 15th to cover yet another tribute event featuring some as yet unannounced luminaries celebrating Chilton’s life and legacy. Fingers crossed for Paul Westerberg.
There’s a Kickstarter fund set up to raise funds for this trip, and while they’ve exceeded their initial goal, contributions are still greatly appreciated, and will go a long way towards ensuring the timely completion of the film, which has been largely self-financed to this point throughout the project’s three year gestation. Sundry prizes are available depending on the level upon which you wish to donate. And hell, for a mere $5, you get an invitation to the wrap party in NYC. Not bad.
