After Alex Chilton’s sudden death of a heart attack days before Big Star’s planned SXSW gig in March, the remaining members soldiered on and turned the show into a celebration of Alex’s life, with the help of the likes of R.E.M.‘s Mike Mills, Evan Dando, John Doe of X, Curt Kirkwood of The Meat Puppets, Sondre Lerche, and M. Ward.
Another Big Star show had been previously scheduled for Memphis’ Levitt Shell on May 15th, and once again, surviving members Jody Stevens, Ken Stringfellow, and Jon Auer took the opportunity to honor Alex’s memory with a tribute show before a crowd of 2000, with Mills and Lerche again joining in, along with Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs), John Davis (Superdrag), and a host of notable local musicians with ties to the band.
The show was filmed for partial inclusion in the Big Star documentary Nothing Can Hurt Me, but if you want to hear it in its entirety, check out the broadcast on The Loft, SIRIUS channel 29 and XM channel 50. Air times are below, in EST.
Saturday, May 29 - 6pm
Sunday, May 30 - 7am
Monday, May 31 - 6pm
