Earlier this year Broken Social Scene released two new EPs, Let’s Try the After - Vol. 1 and Let’s Try the After - Vol. 2, both via Arts & Crafts. Now they have shared a video for Vol. 2‘s “Can’t Find Me Heart” that was made with the assistance of artificial intelligence. Watch the Josh Usheroff-directed video below.
A press release further explains what went into making the video: “Directed by Josh Usheroff, the visually-captivating video features an endless vortex of performance footage run through a series of style transfers and surreal artificial intelligence-created textures. This cutting-edge approach was developed in collaboration with Alex Mordvintsev, a pioneer in neural network generated visuals and creator of Google’s DeepDream.”
Usheroff had this to say in a press release: “I am fascinated by the changes that AI and machine learning are bringing to all aspects of our culture. I wanted to see how this technology was being used in more creative disciplines. I started researching generative art and came across a video by Alex Mordvintsev. The video featured a series of still images zooming and transforming into one another. The results were mesmerizing.”
Previously Broken Social Scene shared Vol. 1‘s first single, “All I Want,” which was one of our Songs of the Week. Then, on the eve of the EP’s release, the Canadian band shared another track from Vol. 1, “Boyfriends,” via a fun video made up entirely of GIFs.
Vol. 1 included “1972,” a song they performed in a session for the Canadian music show The Strombo Show. The other new song they performed on the show was Vol. 2‘s “Can’t Find My Heart.” Then they shared Vol. 2‘s “Can’t Find Me Heart” (which was one of our Songs of the Week). After that the band shared Vol. 2‘s “Big Couches.”
Frontman Kevin Drew had this to say about Vol. 2 in a previous press release: “The theme is to continue. Sickness, suicide, uprise, love, death, betrayal, hurt, joy, sex, communication, battles and divisions ... Let’s just get to their after and start building again. How do we do it within the isolation of self prescribe empty popularity? How does the ego revolt? How does the heart win? Can it? Maybe after we will find out.”
Broken Social Scene’s last album, Hug of Thunder, was released in July 2017 via Arts & Crafts. It was one of our Top 100 Albums of 2017.
