Can To Release “The Lost Tapes”
Box Set of Unreleased Material Out June 19

Mute has announced that on June 19 it will release The Lost Tapes, a three-CD box set of previously unreleased studio and live recordings by German rock experimentalists Can.
Compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore, the songs were recovered when the German Rock N Pop Museum bought and collected pieces from the band’s studio in Weilerswist. Schmidt and Podmore sifted through over 30 hours of music, much of which had barely legible labeling. Instead of archived material and outtakes, the pair found whole tracks from 1968-1977 that were shelved for a variety of reasons, including soundtracks to films that were never released and songs that just never made the cut on the final versions of various albums.
Says Schmidt, “Obviously the tapes weren’t really lost, but were left in the cupboards of the studio archives for so long everybody just forgot about them.” On April 17 at the Le Poisson Rouge in New York City, Schmidt and Podmore will present “The Music Of Can: An Evening of Unreleased Music and Discussion,” to answer audience questions about the lost tapes and the history of the band. Below you can listen to the included track “Milionenspiel.”
