Chairlift Announce Breakup, Will Play Final Shows in 2017
“The time has come to take the next step towards where our passion is pulling us.”

Chairlift released their third album, Moth, in late January via Columbia. Now singer Caroline Polachek and multi-instrumentalist/producer Patrick Wimberly have announced it’ll be their last; they are breaking up. In a statement on Twitter the duo explain they are going their separate ways and will soon be announcing some farewell shows to take place next spring. The news was first announced onstage at their hometown show in Brooklyn last night. There doesn’t appear to be any bad blood between them, Wimberly wants to focus on producing other people and Polachek will concentrate on her solo career. In 2014 Polachek released Arcadia, a very good solo album as Ramona Lisa.
Chairlift was started in 2005 by Polachek and Aaron Pfenning, with Wimberly joining in time for their 2008 debut album, Does You Inspire You. Pfenning left the band in 2010 and both 2012’s excellent sophomore album, Something, and Moth were recorded as a duo. Polachek and Wimberly hope to work together again, writing: “The two of us are family at this point, and will undoubtedly turn up on each other’s work in the future, but the time has come to take the next step towards where our passion is pulling us.” The full statement is below, followed by various videos by the band.
Moth made it on Under the Radar’s Top 100 Albums of 2016 list. Read our interview with Chairlift on Moth. Also read our 2014 print article on Polachek’s Ramona Lisa album as well as our 2014 bonus website interview with her.
