20th Century Fox has shared the first trailer for Dark Phoenix, the latest film about Marvel Comics’ mutants the X-Men. This one follows 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Bryan Singer directed those two films (as well as the first two X-Men films back in the early 2000s), this time it’s Simon Kinberg’s time in the directing chair, making his directorial debut after being a longtime producer and writer in the franchise. Much of the recent X-Men cast returns, including Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey (aka Phoenix), Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, and Evan Peters as Quicksilver. Watch the trailer below.
The film takes place in the 1990s and sees the X-Men deal with Jean Grey turning into a more powerful and dangerous mutant, Dark Phoenix. It is an adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga from the comic books. If that sounds familiar, it’s because 2006’s poorly received X-Men: The Last Stand also used elements of that storyline and Kinberg also co-wrote the script to that film. With the timeline reset at the end of Days of Future Past, Kinberg saw an opportunity to mount a more faithful adaptation of the Dark Phoenix story. We’ll find out if he got it right on February 14, 2019, when 20th Century Fox releases the film.
