Darkside are releasing a new album, Nothing, on February 28 via Matador. Now they have shared the album’s latest single, the near-seven-minute-long “Are You Tired? (Keep on Singing).” Listen below.
Previously the band released the album’s first single, “S.N.C,” via a music video. “S.N.C” was one of our Songs of the Week.
Darkside is now a trio—Nicolás Jaar, Dave Harrington, and new member Tlacael Esparza. Nothing is the band’s third album and follows 2021’s Spiral and 2013’s Psychic.
The album was recorded in the south of France, Los Angeles, and Paris and built out of improvisational jams.
A press release explains the album’s title in greater detail: “For Jaar, this concept of nothing became applicable to other aspects of life. ‘Nothing’ is the reflexive answer when asked about what’s wrong, when there’s too much to even begin to express. In this framework, ‘nothing’ means its mirror opposite. Or ‘nothing’ can be a damning illustration of the lack of change in the world. The maddening inaction on climate change, the political hypocrisy, and the recurring cycles of violence against the people of Palestine, the Sudan, and elsewhere.”
