Over the weekend The Times of London reported that David Bowie would be releasing a brand new album in January and Bowie has since confirmed the news. The 7-song LP is entitled Blackstar and is due out January 8, 2016 (which is Bowie’s birthday). It was recorded at the Magic Shop studio in New York with local jazz musicians. The album’s first single will be released November 20.
The Times describes Blackstar as “an album of long, jazzy jams mixed with the kind of driving beat pioneered by Seventies German bands Can and Kraftwerk” and quotes an unnamed “Bowie insider” who claims the album is “completely bonkers.” The album is the follow-up to 2013’s excellent The Next Day.
Part of the album’s 10-minute long title track has been used as the theme song to the British TV heist drama for Sky Atlantic, The Last Panthers, and you can watch the opening credits to that below.
