David Bowie is releasing a brand new 7-song LP entitled Blackstar (but styled as ★) on January 8, 2016 (which is Bowie’s birthday). Following last week’s trailer for it, we now have the video for the album’s 10-minute long title track. Directed by Johan Renck, the clip is very strange, featuring convulsing dancers, a woman with a tail, a skeleton floating in space, living scarecrows, and Bowie with bandages over his eyes. It seems to take place on another planet and there’s lots of sci-fi and religious imagery. How many other artists of his age and era are still making music and videos as cool as this?

Blackstar was recorded at the Magic Shop studio in New York with local jazz musicians and is the follow-up to 2013’s excellent The Next Day. Part of the album’s title track has been used as the theme song to the British TV heist drama for Sky Atlantic, The Last Panthers.
