Eleanor Friedberger (of the long on hiatus The Fiery Furnaces) released a new album, Rebound, back in May via Frenchkiss. Now she’s shared a video for “Are We Good?” Gil Kenan directed the video, which features images superimposed on Friedberger. Check out the video below, followed by her upcoming tour dates.
Kenan had this to say about the video in a press release: “‘Are We Good?’ got me hooked the first time I heard Eleanor perform it - a fragment made up of fragments. The imagery in the video is picking up on that theme, the arpeggiating rhythm, and giving shape to it on screen. The process of creating the video was nearly stream of consciousness. My wife Eliza and I sat down at her studio with a roll of green paper and cut out shapes. I animated some of them, made some props, and Eliza created a dress (or 2/3 of one) for Eleanor to wear. There’s a pretty version of the video that is all green-screen, without the chromakey, but it’s too risky to release it… someone could go rogue and composite wacky animal bloopers all over Eleanor.”
Previously Friedberger shared Rebound‘s first single, “In Between Stars,” as well as a video for “In Between Stars.” Then she shared a video for another song from the album, “Make Me a Song” (which was one of our Songs of the Week). Then she shared the audio for “Everything,” as well as a video for the song.
Rebound is the follow-up to 2016’s New View. The album was recorded mostly by Friedberger solo, with assistance from producer Clemens Knieper. A previous press release says Rebound is “an entirely new sound for Eleanor, exchanging live instrumentation for programmed drums, a Juno synthesizer, and muted guitars, creating a sonic landscape where influences range from Stereolab and Suicide to Lena Platonos and Yellow Magic Orchestra.” Friedberger is half-Greek and traveled to Greece frequently with her family. Rebound is inspired by time she spent in Greece in late 2016 and is named after an ‘80s goth disco in Athens.
