Singer/songwriter/guitarist EMA (aka Erika M. Anderson) released a new album, Exile in the Outer Ring, back in August via City Slang and is releasing an accompanying EP, Outtakes From Exile, on February 2 via City Slang. Previously she shared EP track “MopTops (Twist While the World Stops).” Now here’s another cut from the EP, “Dark Shadows,” which was originally written for the film 20th Century Women but not actually used by the filmmakers. It’s an excellent slice of dark electro-pop, so it’s fitting that next week EMA starts her European tour opening for Depeche Mode. Listen below.

Anderson had this to say about the song in a press release: “I wrote ‘Dark Shadows’ for the film 20th Century Women. There was a moment when they were looking for a band to play in a punk club and thought maybe EMA would be a good fit. That didn’t end up happening, but I was intrigued by the premise - badass women living in 1970s Santa Barbara getting into punk. That’s all I knew! But I wrote the song with that in mind. I think of it as a survivor song, someone leaving a dark past behind, emerging again into the world. Whoever it is they definitely are wearing sunglasses.”
