Premiere: Sharon Jones gives a heart-wrenching Apollo performance in “Living On Soul”
Concert film captures a now-legendary 2014 residency by Daptone artists

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings
Soul music took a heartbreaking blow when, in the space of twelve calendar months, the world said goodbye to two of its greatest modern-day performers following battles with cancer. Sharon Jones, who fronted the Dap-Kings, was lost in November of last year; we bid farewell to singer Charles Bradley just this past September. They were the two most prominent artists on Daptone Records, the Brooklyn-based label that helped revitalize old-school funk and soul for the 21st Century. Their recent passing makes the new concert documentary Living On Soul all the more poignant, as it captures arguably the biggest series of shows of their entire careers.
Shot during a three-night residency at Harlem’s hallowed Apollo Theater in 2014, Living On Soul intimately captures a blazing run of performances from much of the Daptone family – most notably, the late Jones and Bradley. Filmmakers Cory Bailey and Jeff Broadway combined their six-camera, 4K coverage with interviews with the performers and others involved at the historic Apollo residency: the first of its kind since James Brown last headlined the venue over multiple nights in the late ‘70s.
We’re honored to premiere this clip of Sharon Jones from Living On Soul. In it, she gives an emotional performance in which she opens up about her battle with cancer. It’s a heart-wrenching, powerful piece made all the more moving by the knowledge that she would succumb to the illness just two years later.
Living On Soul will be released by The Orchard digitally and on demand next Tuesday, December 5th. You can watch the trailer below. You can also read our 2016 and 2014 interviews with Sharon Jones, or our 2016 feature on Charles Bradley.
