Father John Misty Covers Ryan Adams Covering Taylor Swift, in the Style of The Velvet Underground
"Blank Space" and "Welcome to New York" from "the classic Ryan Adams album 1989."
Sep 21, 2015 Taylor Swift
Father John Misty (real name Josh Tillman) has shared two covers of songs from the “the classic Ryan Adams album 1989.” No wait, that’s not right. Tillman has released two songs in the style of The Velvet Underground. Well, actually, no, they are covers of two songs by an obscure pop singer named Taylor Swift. Okay, here’s what’s really going on: Father John Misty has covered Ryan Adams covering Taylor Swift, but he’s done it in the style of The Velvet Underground. On Soundcloud Tillman describes it as: “My reinterpretation the classic Ryan Adams album 1989.” Tillman’s wry sense of humor remains intact.
As you’ve probably heard, Adams just released a Taylor Swift-approved album covering Swift’s megahit 2014 record 1989. Now Tillman has decided to make a little fun of the whole celebrity love fest and also garner himself some amusing headlines like the one above. So far he’s shared covers of “Blank Space” and “Welcome to New York,” both which you can stream below, as well as artwork that is simply the Andy Warhol cover for The Velvet Underground and Nico with the title 1989 written on it. Questions abound. How long did it take Tillman to record these covers? Does he really plan on covering all of 1989? Is he recording more covers as I write this? Will Adams and Swift find it funny, even though Tillman has kind of upstaged them?
Check out the covers below, followed by Father John Misty’s upcoming tour dates. Also be sure to watch last week’s amusing “The Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartment” video, in which he has a one-night-stand with himself. Father John Misty’s I Love You, Honeybear is out now via Sub Pop. Also read our recent print article on Father John Misty and our recent bonus Q&A with Tillman (also read our 2012 interview with him).
Update: The songs have now been taken down from Soundcloud. Perhaps Tillman only intended this to be a quick joke or had second thoughts? Or perhaps he was pressured to take them down? Who knows. It was fun while it lasted.
