Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) has shared a new version of “Pure Comedy,” the title track to his latest album, Pure Comedy (released back in April via Sub Pop and Under the Radar‘s #1 Album of 2017 So Far). Entitled “Pure Country,” the new version is a country music take on the song. But as expected from Tillman, it’s more of a parody of a country song than a serious attempt, from Tillman’s hokey accented vocals to the purposefully lo-fi sound to Tillman exclaiming at one point “That’s right boys, bring it on home!” But it does go to show how a powerful song with strong lyrics, which the original version of “Pure Comedy” was, can be rendered inert due to different instrumentation and production choices. Listen below, followed by Father John Misty’s upcoming tour dates.
Tillman recently said he was almost done with his next album and that it would be due out in 2018.
