Actor/musician Finn Wolfhard has announced his debut solo album, Happy Birthday, and shared its first single, “Choose the Latter,” via a music video. As an actor, Wolfhard is best known for the hit Netflix show Stranger Things and for the last two Ghostbusters movies. As a musician, he’s been in the bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys. Happy Birthday is due out June 6 via AWAL. Wolfhard has also announced some tour dates. Below, check out “Choose the Latter,” the album details, and the tour dates.

Wolfhard set himself the challenge of writing 50 songs in 2022 and many of the songs from Happy Birthday emerged from that project. “I ended up writing a lot of terrible stuff, but a few of those songs I was really proud of went to the Aubreys,” Wolfhard says in a press release. “I started realizing a general theme in a lot of the other songs involving my identity, anxieties, nostalgia, childhood, and loneliness. All of that was a part of a bigger puzzle. I knew I wanted to make a record, but I didn’t know with which songs.”

Of balancing his acting and musical pursuits, Wolfhard says: “Music for me has always been something that I can control. And while I’m really grateful for acting and for a long time, it really provided me that peace, it’s just a different thing now that I’m an adult and that it’s a career. I still enjoy it a lot, but when I am by myself and get to play guitar and write a song, it’s a different kind of feeling I’m after.”

Wolfhard plays Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things. The show’s fifth and final season is due later this year. His co-star Joe Keery also has a new album on the way under his Djo musical alias. Djo’s new album, The Crux, is due out April 4 via AWAL. Meanwhile, Stranger Things’ Maya Hawke released an acclaimed new album, Chaos Angel, in 2024 via Mom + Pop. Hawke was on the cover of our last print issue (Issue 73).
