Foxygen has been commissioned to contribute a new song to a new TV special for the American Girl doll line. As unlikely as that may seem, Best Coast supplied a song for a previous special last November, and this special takes place in the 1970s, a decade that has a strong influence on Foxygen’s music. The song is entitled “Be Yourself,” which seems appropriate for something aimed at little girls, and the special is titled An American Girl Story - Ivy & Julie 1976: A Happy Balance. It starts streaming tomorrow on Amazon Prime and the song will also be available tomorrow via Amazon. But you can listen to it now below.

If “Be Yourself” sounds like it was recorded on analog equipment befitting the era, that’s because it was. Foxygen’s Sam France had this to say about the song in a press release: “We love the ‘70s, and we remember the dolls from when we were growing up, so we felt we were right for the job. We wrote our song inspired by ‘70s television show theme songs. It is also a special song because it is the only Foxygen song so far to feature [Foxygen co-founder Jonathan] Rado on lead vocals in the first verse.”

Foxygen released a new album, Hang, back in January via Jagjaguwar. Previously the duo shared “America,” a grandiose track that featured an orchestra, as well as the dance-tastic video for “Follow the Leader” and the videos for “On Lankershim” and “Upon a Hill.”

Foxygen’s last album was 2014’s ...And Star Power. A previous press release described Hang as “their first proper studio record.” Every song on Hang features a 40-plus-piece orchestra arranged and conducted by Trey Pollard. Matthew E. White also did additional arranging. The Lemon Twigs (aka brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario) were the band’s rhythm section, which makes sense since Rado produced their recent debut album, Do Hollywood. Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips also guests on select tracks.
