As previously announced, Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy has been using his downtime from the wordy Pacific Northwest band to put a few words down on paper. How retro-literate of him! Those words took the form of a trilogy of young adult novels—with illustrations by wife Carson Ellis. The film rights were then optioned, and (if there’s any justice in the world) The Decemberists will contribute to the score.

But before that happens, Meloy has to finish writing the project. He’s on his way. Wildwood was published last August, and its sequel—Under Wildwood—will see the light of day September 25. In the meanwhile, check out the first three chapters via TIME’s website.
