David Bowie and Radiohead Not Up for Album of the Year

Oh well. After showing signs that they might welcome indie rock artists (or in some cases at least indie rock adjacent artists) into the big categories in recent years, with Album of the Year wins by Beck, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, and Daft Punk, and Courtney Barnett being nominated for Best New Artist last year, this year it’s business as usual.

Beyoncé leads the field with nine nominations, followed by Drake, Rihanna, and Kanye West, who each got eight nominations. Album of the Year nominations go to all pop and country artists: Adele, Beyoncé, Drake, Justin Bieber, and Sturgill Simpson. So Bieber’s Purpose was really better than David Bowie’s critically acclaimed final album, Blackstarr? Even if Bowie hadn’t passed away just after its release, the album would have been worthy of a nomination. Radiohead’s return to form, A Moon Shaped Pool, should’ve also gotten an Album of the Year nod, but their snub should come as no surprise considering they’ve only been nominated in the category twice before, for 1998’s OK Computer and 2001’s Kid A (losing to old timers Bob Dylan and Steely Dan respectively in those years). This is the organization that in 1985 awarded Lionel Richie’s Can’t Slow Down Album of the Year over Prince & the Revolution’s Purple Rain and Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. (yes we know that “All Night Long (All Night)” and “Hello” are cheesy pop classics, but come on), so they don’t have the best track record. And complaining about Grammy nominations is like a skipped record, repetitive and annoying. So let’s get on with it. Below are the nominations in the main categories (the full list of nominations can be found at the Grammy website). Bowie and Radiohead are nominated for Best Alternative Album, along with Bon Iver, PJ Harvey, and Iggy Pop. And hey, Parquet Courts are nominated for Best Recording Package. The Late Late Show host James Corden will be hosting the 59th Annual Grammy Awards on February 12, 2017 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and live on CBS.
