Grandaddy have announced a new album and shared a video for recently shared single, “Way We Won’t,” which stars actor Jason Ritter (Parenthood, Girls, Joan of Arcadia). The album is titled Last Place and due out March 3, 2017 via 30th Century Records, a label run by Danger Mouse. Below is the “Way We Won’t” video via NPR Music, followed by the album’s tracklist.
Last month the band shared two new songs: the more upbeat “Way We Won’t” and the slower ballad “Clear Your History.” Chris Grieder directed the “Way We Won’t” video, which stars Ritter as a man trapped on a desert road and unable to hitch a ride with anyone. Stick around for the amusing ending.
Grandaddy have a special place with Under the Radar, as they were on the cover of our very first print magazine, way back in 2001. The article was in honor of their 2000-released masterpiece The Sophtware Slump. And while they perhaps never quite matched the heights of that album, they still had a very solid catalogue before and after that record. It’s been a long 10 years since the band’s last album, 2006’s Just Like the Fambly Cat, so Last Place will be their first album in over a decade.
Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle had this to say about the video to NPR Music: “To be honest, I would have loved to have made a video based exactly on the lyrics of this song. But I really like Chris Grieder’s treatment because the main character is an outsider who has taken to wandering and can’t get accepted (picked up) by a varying array of characters. I felt it was important to place a girl in the cast of characters, someone who had some attachment to the loner guy and perhaps, just perhaps, was responsible for putting him on that lonely road. I have to say my absolute favorite part is the very end (you have to watch it).”
Grieder added: “I wanted bits of surreal humor to bring it all together. Jason Ritter was having so much fun with the role while we were shooting, and he really did a fantastic job at capturing this sweet and gentle man who’s constantly down on his luck, and maybe losing his mind a bit.”
