Gruff Rhys, frontman of Britpop outliers and survivors Super Furry Animals, has shared a new song, “I Love EU.” The Welsh musician wrote the song in support of the U.K. staying in the European Union. This summer there will be a referendum in the U.K. on whether or not they should stay in the European Union. This is Rhys’ love song to the continent. You can listen below.
Rhys has also written an editorial for The Guardian about the song and the referendum. “My new song genuinely came to me in a daydream, while I was trying to tune in my faulty DAB radio,” he explains. “I heard a snippet of news about this badly timed referendum on staying or leaving the EU and suddenly it hit me hard how much I’d miss it if the U.K., true to its tradition of recreational vandalism, managed inexplicably to kick itself out of this sophisticated European nightclub.” Read his full essay at The Guardian here.
Super Furry Animals also have some U.S. tour dates, their first in six years, which are also below. Rhys’ last solo album was 2014’s American Interior (which was also a documentary film, a book, and an app).
