Cause of Death Still Unknown
May 26, 2009 Wilco
Jay Bennett, a former Wilco contributor, was pronounced dead this past Sunday according to a Chicago Sun-Times blog. Bennett was one of the original touring members and acted as a multi-instrumentalist for the band, collaborating with Jeff Tweedy until their perfectionist tendencies clashed during recording for the 2002 album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
According to an update on the Sun-Times, a Champaign County Coroner told the Associated Press that Bennett’s cause of death had not yet been determined and further testing was needed. He reportedly died in his sleep.
Jeff Tweedy released a statement in response to Bennett’s death that reads as follows:
“We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him—as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band’s songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time.”
Earlier this month Bennett had sued Tweddy for back royalities and for compensation for his participation in the Wilco documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, which centered on the creation of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.Since leaving Wilco Bennett had released several solo albums and had been working on a new record, tentatively titled Kicking at the Perfumed Air.
