Mogwai released a new album, Every Country’s Sun, last Friday (September 1) via Temporary Residence Inc. Previously they had shared the album’s first single, and opening track, “Coolverine,” as well as a cool black & white slow motion video for the song chronicling a telekinetic event, and its second single, “Party in the Dark” (one of the band’s more accessible songs), as well as a video for “Party in the Dark” inspired by 1980s sci-fi and horror movies. They also shared another new song, “Eternal Panther.” But it’s not to be found on Every Country’s Sun, instead it’s the B-side to the “Party in the Dark” 7-inch. Like the A-side, it also features vocals (which isn’t always a given for Mogwai).

Every Country’s Sun is the first Mogwai album without John Cummings, who left in late 2015. The lineup is now Stuart Braithwaite (guitar, vocals), Barry Burns (keyboards, computer, guitar), Dominic Aitchison (bass), and Martin Bulloch (drums). A previous press release described the album as such: “This is music as a keep-out chrysalis, protective audio armor through exalting organs and portentous, dissonant guitar fuzz warping at the edges, bending the world inside-out into a reality in which you’d much rather live.”

Braithwaite had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “What’s going on in the world politically and socially has to affect you. It was very much on our minds, especially in America. We were vaguely getting over the Scottish referendum, then the death of David Bowie, along comes Brexit, and then Trump. The album was written in a very turbulent, intense period so I think it maybe feels like some kind of shield from that? That’s maybe just my take. Because it literally was for me.”
