As of April 6th, 2010, Seattle-based Kill Rock Stars Records will be adding two Elliott Smith albums to their catalog: Roman Candle, Smith’s first album (originally released on Cavity Search), and the posthumously-released From a Basement on the Hill (originally released by ANTI-). With this move, KRS will have acquired all of Smith’s independent releases.
The movement of Roman Candle to the Seattle label’s catalog will also bring the album into vinyl format for the first time in the U.S. Larry Crane of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Smith’s family handled the album’s re-mastering for the rerelease, working closely “to match the volume of the rest of Elliott’s KRS catalog in a graceful way,” according to a press release.
To mark the occasion, KRS has offered up an unreleased Elliott Smith song, “Cecilia/Amanda,” which was recorded at Jackpot! Recording Studios by Crane himself. You can hear the track right here on Under the Radar, and check out our interview with Smith from 2003 issue as well. It was his final professional interview.
