Australian experimental musician Kirin J Callinan has announced a new album, Bravado, and shared a slightly NSFW video for “S.A.D.” (which stands for “Song About Drugs”). The album is due out June 9 via Terrible Records and features a slew of special guests, including Weyes Blood, Mac DeMarco, Owen Pallett, Connan Mockasin, James Chance, Sean Nicholas Savage, Jorge Elbrecht, and others. Danny Cohen directed the tongue-in-cheek “S.A.D.” video, which was filmed in Cuba and features lots of hilarious shots of Callinan singing the song and posing in various outfits, including a ridiculous Speedo. Watch it below, followed by the album’s tracklist and cover art, as well as Callinan’s upcoming tour dates, including some opening for POND and Mac DeMarco. Also below is the previously shared video for title track “Bravado.”
S.A.D. director Danny Cohen had this to say about the video: “I’d been wanting to shoot Kirin for a while, I knew we could create something really wild and that he’d be down for anything I threw at him. We wanted to explore the potential fine line between smut and art, beauty and vulgar, poser and provocateur. We wanted to explore around the permissions a person can create in society and see which side of those our collaborations would fall into.”
Callinan previously shared a funny mockumentary video for Bravado track “Telling Me This.” It was a Behind the Music style spoof called Off the Record that featured Callinan talking about the song, along with fellow musicians, including Mac DeMarco, Mark Ronson, Weyes Blood, Jack Black, Jay Watson (Tame Impala, Gum, POND), Sebastien Teller, Ladyhawke, and others. Callinan’s debut album, Embracism, came out in 2013 and in 2015 he released a video for a new song featuring Connan Mockasin, “The Teacher,” which isn’t featured on the new album.
