Laura Marling has announced a new album, Semper Femina, and shared a video for its first single, “Soothing.” Semper Femina is due out on March 10, 2017 on More Alarming Records, which is Marling’s own label via Kobalt Music Recordings. Marling directed the “Soothing” video herself, in her directorial debut. It’s vaguely NSFW, as it features two women in skintight leather outfits intertwined on a bed, and was inspired by “a series of vivid dreams Laura experienced whilst making the album,” so says a press release. Watch it below, followed by the album’s tracklist and Marling’s upcoming tour dates.
Semper Femina is the 26-year-old’s sixth album and the follow-up to 2015’s Short Movie. Marling recorded the album in Los Angeles and co-produced it with Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes, Jim James). As the title suggests, the album tackles gender and sexuality. As Marling explains in a press release: “I started out writing Semper Femina as if a man was writing about a woman, and then I thought; ‘it’s not a man, it’s me. I don’t need to pretend it’s a man to justify the intimacy, or the way I’m looking and feeling about women. It’s me looking specifically at women and feeling great empathy towards them, and by proxy, towards myself.’”
