Listen: Jim James – “Same Old Lie”
Eternally Even Due Out November 4 via ATO
Sep 23, 2016 Jim James
My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James is releasing a new solo album, Eternally Even, on November 4 via ATO. When the album was announced no new music was shared and neither was the tracklist. But now James has shared the album’s politically-charged first single, “Same Old Lie,” which you can stream below via Spotify (or it’s up on iTunes, Apple Music, and elsewhere). James has also released the album’s tracklist, which is also below as well as the song’s lyrics and his upcoming tour dates.
One dollar from every ticket purchased for James’ U.S. tour will benefit My Morning Jacket’s Waterfall Project, which will donate to the following organizations: Everytown For Gun Safety Support Fund, The Fairness Campaign, and Healthcare Now.
Eternally Even is James’ second solo album, the follow-up to 2013’s Regions of Light and Sound of God. It was co-produced by James and Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes). A press release calls Eternally Even “a heart-thumping call to action” and points out that “the timing of its release, smack in the middle of election season, is no accident.”
James recently issued a statement about the album: “I wanted to make an album that hopefully speaks to the issues of the day, many of which, sadly, are issues we have been dealing with since the beginning of time. Most of what I think about right now is how so many things in the world are SO fucked up—our political system is broken and corrupt…our earth is being destroyed by climate change…people are not treating each other with equality and respect… and I think—are we going to make it? Are we going to figure it out and fix it before it’s too late? Can we ever truly open our hearts and embrace love in all its beautiful forms? I think it’s still possible. I still have hope in humanity. I’m just trying to be a part of the discussion and encourage people to speak out for equality, to not be afraid to speak out for peace and love. All of us feel afraid at times in these absolutely insane times, but its important we speak our minds, cast our votes, and do not give in to fear and hatred.”
My Morning Jacket released their last album, The Waterfall, in 2015. Read our 2015 interview with Jim James about the album.
“Same Old Lie” Lyrics:
IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE THEY TELL YOU
WHEN YOU’RE LITTLE-
TRY TO MAKE YOU FORGET JUST WHAT IT IS
YOU’RE REALLY MADE OF.
AND FOLLOW ON JUST LIKE MOST EVERYONE…
BUT YOU AND ME WE AIN’T LIKE MOST EVERYONE.
PURE INDIVIDUAL BRIGHT AS THE SHINING SUN.
AND SURE AS HELL WE KNOW- WHERE IT IS WE COME FROM.
AND WHERE IT IS YEAH WE PROBABLY GOING BACK TO-
BUT NOW WE GONNA LIVE A LITTLE-
TRY AND GET A LITTLE TRUTH.
IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE.
IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE YOU BEEN READING ABOUT
BLEEDING OUT-
NOW WHO’S GETTING CHEATED OUT?
YOU BEST BELIEVE IT’S THE SILENT MAJORITY-
AND IF YOU DON’T VOTE IT’S ON YOU- NOT ME.
IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE TOLD FROM THE DAWN OF TIME.
STRETCH IT OUT A LITTLE TRY TO MILK EVERY LAST DIME.
HATE CRIMES. SHELTER LINES. THEY TRY TO TAKE WHAT’S YOURS AND MINE…
IS THERE ANY PEACE TO BE FOUND IN A LIFETIME?
IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE.
IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE YOU GOTTA LIVE WITH IT-
OR IF YOU GOT SENSE THEN YOU BETTER TRY CHANGING IT.
BUT NOTHING IS MORE DIFFICULT THAN CHANGING WHAT’S BEEN COMFORTABLE-
WE’VE SEEN IT TRIED A MILLION TIMES- IT’S HARD TO THINK WHEN HYPNOTIZED.
BUT A LIES A LIE- IT DESTROYS FROM THE INSIDE -DECAYS THE TEETH FROM BEHIND THAT FALSE SMILE.
A LIE IS A LIE AND I’VE TOLD MY SHARE BUT- I KNOW IM GONNA SUFFER FOR THE SHIT I PUT OUT THERE.
IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE.
WELL IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE- I THINK I DIED A LITTLE.
GUNS DRAWN- FACES LONG-
HOW MUCH KILLING CAN BE DONE?
IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE THEY TELL YOU WHEN YOU DIE-
THERE ARE MANSIONS UP IN HEAVEN- 50 VIRGINS OFF IN THE SKY.
WELL YOU CANT TRADE TODAY FOR SOME FAR OFF PROMISE OF TOMORROW…
YOU CAN’T BUILD LOVE OUT OF GUNS BLOOD AND SORROW.
THEY SAY WE CANT LIVE TOGETHER-
BUT WE KNOW THAT’S A LIE-
CUZ WE KNOW IT IN OUR HEART WE CAN MAKE IT IF WE TRY.
IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE.
SAME LIE.
