Madeline Kenney released her debut album, Night Night at the First Landing, back in September via Company. Now she has shared a new cover of Cass McCombs’ “Medusa’s Outhouse,” which is not found on her debut album. McCombs’ original was found on last year’s album Mangy Love (on ANTI-). Listen to Kenney’s version below.

Read our recent Pleased to Meet You interview with Madeline Kenney.

Previously Kenney’s “Rita” was one of our Songs of the Week, and we also shared another song from the album, “Big One” (which was also one of our Songs of the Week) and a video for “Always.”

Kenney had this to say about the cover in the YouTube description: “I go through phases of learning bunches of songs by certain artists—last year it was Arthur Russell, the year before that it was Alex G and the Silver Jews, and this year it’s Cass McCombs. I’m such a huge fan of his lyrics and writing skills, but I also think that his arrangements and melodies are devastatingly beautiful and tasteful. I recorded a few instruments with the help of some interns and engineers at Women’s Audio Mission in SF.”

Night Nighy at the First Landing was produced by Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bear (formerly known as Chaz Bundick), but there’s nothing chillwave or dance-y about it. Instead Kenney is more in vein of Angel Olsen or Marika Hackman, with some dream-pop touches thrown in.
