Listen: Okkervil River - “Down Down the Deep River”
With Interactive Map of Will Sheff's Hometown
Jul 17, 2013
Okkervil River
Heading towards the release of their new album The Silver Gymnasium on Sept. 3, Okkervil River has shared another piece of the effort with the song “Down Down the Deep River.” Premiered on NPR’s All Songs Considered the track has been paired with an interactive map of Will Sheff’s childhood hometown of Meriden, NH, around which the new record is conceptually centered. The digital tour is narrated by Sheff himself, with him providing insight into everything from the “crappy” strip mall “where you’d buy a cool jean jacket,” the church he used to break into to play organ, to the gas station where he rented Italian horror flicks on VHS. Click here to listen to the new track, and here to explore the map.
In addition to debuting “Down Down the Deep River” online, Sheff recently traveled back to the area where he grew up. There he got together with his childhood friend Aaron Johnson (reconnecting after 15 years) and performed the song at various New England open mic nights.
