Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Dupuis is releasing her debut solo album under the moniker Sad13. The album, Slugger, is due out November 11 via Carpark. Previously she shared its first three single, “Get a Yes,” ”<2,” and “Devil in U.” Now here’s another song from the album, “Hype,” which you can listen to below.
According to NPR, the song was originally intended to be a Speedy Ortiz song but the band decided against recording it “because of one lyric that would offend their mothers.” NPR also adds: “Dupuis says the song is a critique on how women are treated unfairly in the music industry.”
The album was recorded after Dupuis relocated to Philadelphia. “I wrote and played and recorded almost all of it in the two weeks I was subletting a friend’s tiny bedroom,” says Dupuis, who self-produced Slugger. The album was mixed by Gabe Wax (Beirut, Wye Oak, Boots), mastered by Emily Lazar (Sia, HAIM, Sky Ferreira), and on its final track, “Coming Into Powers,” features a guest appearance from rapper, producer, and PhD student Sammus.
