The Mountain Goats are releasing a new album, Goths, on May 19 via Merge. The band previously shared the album’s first single, “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds.” Now here’s another song from the album, the dramatic opening track “Rain in Soho.” It features the Nashville Symphony Chorus, sounding ominous in the background. Listen below via NPR or Spotify.
Goths is the follow-up to 2015’s wrestling-themed Beat the Champ. John Darnielle wrote all the songs bar “Shelved,” which was co-written by Darnielle and bassist Peter Hughes. “Rain in Soho” features a vocal arrangement by Dan Perry performed by members of the Nashville Symphony Chorus. The Bandcamp listing for the album points out that the album has “no comped vocals,” “no pitch correction,” and “no guitars.” Darnielle recently released a novel, Universal Harvester.
