Off Tribute Compilation Red Hot + FELA
Jun 01, 2012 Tune-Yards
In an effort to help the Red Hot Organization and the (RED) initiative in their fight against AIDS in Africa, tUnE-yArDs’ Merrill Garbus has joined forces with The Roots’ Questlove to be a part of an upcoming tribute compilation entitled (RED) Hot + Fela, honoring the work of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Joined by Ghanaian-American rapper Akua Naru and African singer Angélique Kidjo, Garbus and Questlove’s particular contribution is a cover of Kuti’s “Lady.” While the full compilation is tentatively scheduled to be released later this fall, the single is available on iTunes right now and can be streamed below. The single’s release is meant to kick-off a ten day awareness campaign called (RED) Rush to Zero, which supports an initiative to end mother-to-child tranfer of the HIV virus and will provide unique fundraising auction items from the likes of The Black Keys, Elvis Costello, Coldplay, Metric, The xx, and Rufus Wainwright among others.
