It’s been three years since the release of Between Places, the debut album by Sweden’s Young Dreams (put out by Modular). Now the band has broken the silence and released a brand new single, “Of the City.” They also promise that their long-awaited sophomore album will be due out in 2017. Listen to “Of the City” below.

Young Dreams’ Matis Tellez started working on the song in 2012, right after recording Between Places, and it was intended to be on the original follow-up to their debut, which was to be a concept album. “It was conceived as a requiem for God,” says Tellez in a press release. The album featured a church choir and a small classical orchestra, but Tellez scrapped it because he was worried it was blasphemous.

Tellez commented on the recording of “Of the City”: “I had tried to record this track three times before and never got it right. The lyrics and vocals, written and performed by our singer (Rune Vandaskog), were spot on. And I had the orchestral and choral arrangements right, but I didn’t feel the backing. So I thought maybe the composition itself wasn’t good enough. I re-recorded everything except the orchestra and choir. It has kind of the same vibe as the new album we just finished. Turns out the track was genius. It just needed the right arrangement and mix. The mix sounds amazing. I mixed it myself.”

Also below is a weird video Q&A with the band that is essentially a spoken word version of the press release.
