Hard to Google London collective Y have released their brand-new single “Skipper” today via SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special) and Hideous Mink Records (Alien Chicks, Opus Kink).

Emerging from the capital’s ever-fertile underground, Y have quickly established themselves as one of the most compelling live acts on the circuit. Cutting their teeth at The Windmill, a rite of passage for many of South London’s most adventurous bands, they’ve gone on to support the likes of Fat Dog, KEG and Warmduscher. Following a sold-out headline show at the 100 Club earlier this year, the group spent the summer making their mark on festivals including The Great Escape, Brighton, The Corners and Manchester Psych Festival. They return to London on October 30th for a headline show at Third Man Records in Soho to celebrate the release of their new single.

“Skipper” opens with echoes of early Psychedelic Furs before twisting into something distinctly their own, sharp, restless and exhilarating.

Speaking about the track, Y said: “‘Skipper’ was an obvious choice for our next single, as we’ve always had a strong reaction from audiences when playing it live. With this track, we wanted to push the sound we’ve become known for, restless and relentless. Lyrically, the track ‘Skipper’ addresses class divide and hierarchy in which the rich skip through a world they feel they own. It is written like an acid trip, full of wordplay. Sonically, ‘Skipper’ aggresses against the outdated; it takes influences from the best of the past, whilst being firmly set in the now but with an eye on the future.”

Y are Adam Brennan (vocals, guitar), Sophie Coppin (vocals, synth), Dan GB (bass), Fells (drums) and Harry McHale (sax).
