M. Ward Going At It Alone…Again
New Solo Album in the Works
May 03, 2011
M. Ward
“This is my year,” said M. Ward in a recent interview with HitFix, and the folk artist means business. After spending the last couple of years on notable collaborative projects, including the folk-pop duo She & Him with songwriting actress Zooey Deschanel and the Conor Oberst-led supergroup Monsters of Folk, Ward is finally settling down—with himself. According to HitFix, Ward is devoting 2011 solely to him and his music, which includes finishing up a batch of unfinished material that will, eventually, evolve into his latest solo effort since 2009.
“I have a giant backlog of songs that… I really haven’t had time to revisit or improve upon. It’s time to finish writing those songs,” Ward told HitFix, adding that he’s going to be recording the songs at home in Portland, where he feels most inspired.
While there’s no word yet on when his new solo album will be recorded and finished, Ward will be taking center stage this year for a series of solo shows that commence this May in Portland. According to Ward, the shows will feature only him, his guitar, and his own music. The tour includes back-to-back dates at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, a European stretch, and opening shows for Bright Eyes on their North American tour.
“I’m going back to what it was when I first started, performing, writing and recording by myself,” Ward said.
