M.I.A. Gives America the Middle Finger
Super Bowl Halftime Show Made Interesting Again
Feb 06, 2012 M.I.A.
Just when M.I.A. seemed to be recovering from the bad taste she left in everyone’s mouth in 2010 (releasing a critically mixed album, being part of an offensive music video, and throwing a fit after a revealing New York Times Magazine cover story), recently delivering the well received new single “Bad Girls” and its crazy new music video, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam unceremoniously stole the spotlight of Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show by flipping the bird to the viewers at home.
According to Entertainment Weekly both NBC issued a statement concerning the split second incident. NBC said, “We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime. It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late.” The NFL issued its own statement, saying, “There was a failure in NBC’s delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans.”
The whole occurrence has naturally drawn comparisons to the now infamous “wardrobe malfunction” during Janet Jackson’s 2004 halftime show performance. M.I.A. however, has yet to make a statement in regard to the event.
