Marissa Nadler is releasing a new album, For My Crimes, on September 28 via Sacred Bones and Bella Union. Previously she shared its title track, which features backing vocals from Angel Olsen, as well as an acoustic video for the song. Now she has shared another song from the album, “Blue Vapor,” via a video for the song. The song features Kristin Kontrol on backing vocals and drumming from Patty Schemel of Hole. Watch the video below, followed by her upcoming tour dates.
Nadler had this to say about the video in a press release: “[Director] Thomas McMahan beautifully articulates the intangible sense of depersonalization depicted in the song. He makes some heads explode and incinerates everything in sight. He does so beautifully and seamlessly and leaves ‘Blue Vapor’ a gorgeous monochromatic world to exist in. Taking an abstract approach, he utilizes various experimental and mixed media animation techniques, merging the mood and imagery of the song with hallucinatory visuals that make me go ‘wow’ like I wanted to. His videos for Autolux and Drab Majesty, among many others, really stand apart for me in their uniqueness and artfulness. I hope to make more videos with Thomas because he has an amazing ability to transform the mundane into the supernatural.”
Nadler co-produced the album with Lawrence Rothman and Justin Raisen at Rothman’s Laurel Canyon studio, House of Lux. Along with Olsen and Kristin Kontrol, the album also features guest vocals from Sharon Van Etten. Plus Mary Lattimore contributes harp and experimental multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin is on strings. Nadler purposefully wanted strong female performers to guest on the album, with saxophonist Dana Colley (Morphine) the lone male player.
Nadler is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and a semi-retired art teacher (a press release points out that she has one student left, a 95-year-old named Doris). Still, For My Crimes is the first time one of her paintings has graced one of her album’s covers. She also has other paintings inspired by some of the album’s tracks and they will be included as prints in the limited edition version of For My Crimes (and some of the original paintings will also be for sale on Nadler’s website).
