Soul legend and civil rights activist Mavis Staples is releasing a new album, We Get By, on May 10 via ANTI-. Ben Harper produced the album. Now she has shared another song from it, “Anytime.” Listen below, followed by Staples’ upcoming tour dates.
Harper had this to say in a press release: “I come from a family of Mavis fans. So her music has been woven into the fabric of my life from the very start. When I got the call for this gig, it felt like my entire career, everything I’d ever written, had been pre-production for this.”
The album is the follow-up to 2017’s If All I Was Was Black, which was produced by Wilco‘s Jeff Tweedy.
Staples’ upcoming tour dates include three shows dubbed “Mavis & Friends: Celebrating 80 Years of Mavis Staples,” which will feature special guests each night, including David Byrne, Jason Isbell, Jon Batiste, John Prine, Elle King, Benjamin Booker, and more. Proceeds from these three shows “will go directly towards extending the Newport Folk Festivals Foundation’s support of music education programs in New York, Nashville and Los Angeles.”
Staples had this to say about the shows: “I just wanted the world to know that I made it to 80! I am letting my fans know that I’m over the hill but now I’m going over the mountain.”
