Los Angeles-based rock duo Mediocre, consisting of guitarist/vocalist Piper Torrison (she/they) and bassist/vocalist Keely Martin (she/her), is set to release their debut album, Growth Eater, on September 27 via Dangerbird Records. Following the release of their lead single “Fun Time Fix (We Go Go),” Mediocre has now shared another track from the album entitled “Litterbug!”
“Litterbug!” showcases the duo’s indie-rock sound, and playful pop sensibility with powerful guitar riffs and dynamic percussion that draw inspiration from ‘00s rock influences. The song explores the feeling of being mentally scattered, with lyrics that reflect an awareness of the chaos and clutter one creates in their environment and mind.
The band explains, “‘Litterbug!’ is about recognizing the mess you make in your own life—both physically and mentally. It’s about the frustration of knowing that these issues are self-inflicted, and the realization that accepting and dealing with your own ‘trash’ is the first step toward cleaning it up.”
After writing songs during their overlapping time in Boston—drawing inspiration from the intricate pop arrangements of Tegan and Sara’s The Con, the heartfelt vocals of Jenny Lewis, and the yearning indie rock of Broken Social Scene—Mediocre’s Piper Torrison and Keely Martin teamed up with drummer Jake Pavlica and producer Danny Nogueiras (No Win) at his Glassell Park studio.
Their debut album, Growth Eater, explores themes of self-destruction and the potential for positive change. The title reflects the ways we can harm ourselves, but also the opportunity for growth when we break free from detrimental habits. As best friends since high school, Piper and Keely have navigated significant life changes together, and Growth Eater offers a sense of solace and stability in a world that constantly shifts beneath our feet.
