Miley Cyrus
Last night Miley Cyrus hosted MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMAs), another pointless and over-scripted awards show in which Twitter feuds were resolved and Kanye West announced he was running for president in 2020 during his rambling 13-minute acceptance speech. (In news more pressing than celebrities celebrating themselves, our current president Obama is in Alaska trying to convince the world to do something about climate change before it’s too late, but I digress.) The rare highlight, if you can all it that, for indie music fans (whoever they are these days) was Cyrus performing a new song with The Flaming Lips, “Dooo It!” The song is partly about smoking pot and the gaudy performance featured drag queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race and ended with The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne shooting smoke guns out of Cyrus’ crotch. How classy.
Following the performance Cyrus announced from the stage that she was surprise releasing Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, her new collaborative album with The Flaming Lips that also features Ariel Pink, Big Sean, and Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel. The title is inspired by her recent dead pets. You can stream the full thing below via Soundcloud and also watch the video for “Dooo It!”, which is mainly a close-up of Cyrus’ mouth as liquid glitter and other things ooze in and out of her mouth and over her face
You can read an interview with Cyrus and Coyne about the making of the album over at The New York Times of all places. Above is the album cover and below is the tracklist.
