Montréal post-rockers Ought have announced a new album, Room Inside the World, and shared a video for its first single, “These 3 Things.” Room Inside the World is due out February 16, 2018 via Merge (their first for the label, previously they were on Constellation). Watch the “These 3 Things” video below. Also below are the album’s cover art and the band’s upcoming tour dates.
The video features a strange scientific test involving a dummy and then an actual man. Directors Jonny Look and Scottie Cameron had this to say about the video in a press release: “Life can be problematic. Everything takes time and energy. We challenged ourselves to create devices of great convenience using three items. When initially testing the convenience machines without the human variable, we discovered luxury and success. However, it was sterile. The beauty only came with the unpredictable moments brought by the human element. Being human is better than looking for an easy way out.”
Room Inside the World was recorded at the Rare Book Room studio in Brooklyn with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Animal Collective). A press release describes the album as such: ”Room Inside the World was approached with newfound patience. Together, Ought constructed a (digital) moodboard to set their intentions: Brian Eno and Stereolab synths, the Mekons’ 1985 album Fear and Whiskey, and Gerhard Richter and Kenneth Anger’s sexy, fluorescent hyperreal all made it into the melting pot.”
The album is the follow-up to 2015’s second album, Sun Coming Down. Read our 2014 interview with Ought.
