France’s Phoenix recently announced their new album, Ti Amo, via a New York Times interview. It’s due out June 9 via Glassnote. Now they have officially announced the album and shared its first single, shiny album opener “J-Boy.” They have also revealed the album’s tracklist and cover art. Check it all out below.
Phoenix issued a statement about Ti Amo, saying it’s “an album about simple pure emotions: love, desire, lust and innocence, it’s also a record about our European, Latin roots, a fantasized version of Italy: a lost paradise made of eternal Roman summers (hyper-light, hyper-clarity, pistachio gelato), juke-boxes on the beach, Monica Vitti and Marcello Mastroiani, fearless desire and Antique marble statues.”
Phoenix last released an album in 2013 with Bankrupt! but they have recently been teasing their new album. In the New York Times article guitarist Laurent Brancowitz said the new album recalls “summer and Italian discos.” Ti Amo was recorded in an old Paris opera house near the Pompidou Center. Starting in 2014 the band took over the top floor of the building that is now a museum, concert hall, and tech incubator. The article describes it as a sunny album. “J-Boy” is said to be inspired by science fiction films, including Close Encounter of the Third Kind. Singer Thomas Mars had this to say about the song and its lyrics: “It’s a sort of romantic sci-fi feeling I like. That direction came in part from being bored with my own voice; I tried to find a sci-fi voice that’s kind of a character.”
Phoenix have previously announced a bunch of tour dates for this summer, shared a teaser video that included a snippet of new music, posted a Twitter video that hinted at a new song, and had a new song featured in a Calvin Kline underwear commercial directed by Sofia Coppola, the wife of Phoenix frontman Mars, that featured actresses Kirsten Dunst and Rashida Jones, among others.
