Pixies Share New Video for “Long Rider” Inspired By Paz Lenchantin’s Late Friend
Beneath the Eyrie Out Now via Infectious/BMG
Oct 30, 2019 Pixies
Pixies released a new album, Beneath the Eyrie, in September via Infectious/BMG. Now they have shared a video for the album’s “Long Rider.” The band’s Paz Lenchantin came up with the idea, which was inspired by a friend of hers, Desiree, who was an avid surfer and died while doing it. Gilbert Trejo directed the clip, which features pro-surfer Danica Elbertse, also a friend of Lenchantin’s. Watch it below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.
Lenchantin had this to say about the video in a press release: “It was almost as if Desiree had this dream before she went surfing that morning, and hints at that even if she had known her fate, she would still have taken that wave.”
Pick up our current print issue (the My Favorite Album Issue) to read our joint interview between Pixies’ Joey Santiago and Mew’s Jonas Bjerre about Pixies’ classic album, Doolittle, Bjerre’s favorite album.
We previously posted our review of Beneath the Eyrie and you can read that here.
Previously Pixies shared Beneath the Eyrie‘s first single, “On Graveyard Hill,” as well as a video for the song. Then they shared another song from the album, “Catfish Kate,” via an animated video for the track (it was one of our Songs of the Week). Then they stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform “Catfish Kate.”
A previous press release said Beneath the Eyrie features “tales of witches, Daniel Boone, misfits, and other characters.”
The band features Black Francis (vocals, guitars), Joey Santiago (guitars), David Lovering (drums), and Paz Lenchantin (bass). Tom Dalgety produced Beneath the Eyrie, which was written over the course of 2018 and recorded last December at Dreamland Recordings near Woodstock, NY. The studio was originally St. John’s Church built in 1896. The album’s title was inspired when “Lovering spotted an eagles nest - or ‘eyrie’ - right above the studio in a tree.”
The making of the album is being chronicled in It’s a Pixies Podcast, which is produced by the band and hosted/narrated by New York Times best-selling author Tony Fletcher.
Beneath the Eyrie is Pixies’ third album since reuniting in 2004 and is the follow-up to 2016’s Head Carrier (which was the first album to feature Lenchantin) and 2014’s Indie Cindy (which was more of an EP collection than an album).
Korda Marshall, UK SVP Music, BMG, had this to say in a previous press release about signing the band: “There are not many bands that can justifiably claim to have changed the sound of music. The Pixies are one, and they continue to push the boundaries with their brilliant new album. We are honored and proud to have signed them to Infectious/BMG and really look forward to working with them in the future.”
